The Conversation Cafe
The Conversation Cafe ran at lunchtime in Cultúrlann Uí Chanáin in the autumn of 2019. This was a safe place where Syrian refugees could have some lunch with local English speaking people and practice their English in an informal and friendly environment. There were cards placed on the tables for different topics to discuss such as shopping, family, food, work etc. The English speaking participants moved to a different table every 10/15 minutes. The project helped to increase confidence in speaking English and encouraged integration.
The Conversation Cafe was a great success. The response from the Syrian group was very positive, they really enjoyed practicing their English in this fun and informal way and said that it would help them to gain confidence. They would have liked the sessions to be longer. Many thanks to the Department of the Economy through Belfast Met for supporting this project.
We are exploring ways to extend this project to make it an ongoing activity.
